How to improvise on guitar?

So i was wondering when people improvise do they think alot. Like okay i just played A now im going to go to the minor 3rd to get… etc stuff like that. Or do u just play trying to stay in the scale and come up with melodies.

Im just starting now. So i usually just stay within A minor and use alot of hamer ons and bends. But most of the time it just feels really mindless like im doing something wrong

Answer:well, once you get into the groove of things it comes natrually, keep trying, see your tutor, and keep learning, but not focusing on improvising: slowly but surely youll become excellent at it: i play guitar, but i learnt funk/blues bass on the following scale:

e————————————-…

b————————————-…

g——————–23457–|———…

d————-3457—————|—-…

a——1345————————–|…

e-136———————————…

its just notes that sounded good to me, and i mixed them: no theory or logic in them, i just started playing and suddenly i was great at it, but just give it time.

by the way, use octaves a lot, playing the lower then the higer, and shifting it down the neck.

sorry if this is bad advice: i teach myself so im not an expert at giving advice

Answer:The key to improvisation is phrasing. A phrase is a short, 3 to 5 note pattern that sounds cool. It can be made up of hammer ons, pull offs, bends, slides, etc. Start by playing some simple phrases and link them to other basic phrases to create more complex phrases. Some people refer to this as a "riff" but a riff is usually a repetitive pattern whereas phrases are often played over a riff. It is very much like a spoken conversation. You can make a statement and reply to it and expand on it etc.

Try this experiment with phrasing; Play a phrase that asks a question then answer the question in the next phrase. Your thinking "how the heck do I do that!?" It is actually simple, play a phrase that ends up with a bend up and leave it hanging there like a "?" Then release the bend in the next phrase and end up on the tonic note (A). This is a "call and return" type of phrase and is a very easy way of delivering a catchy improvisation.

By developing your bag of phrases and riffs you will become much better at improvising over a basic chord progression. This is a hall mark of blues guitar and basic rock so start off by emulating some of these ideas and add more of your own cool ideas to it!

good luck!
